WHOIS Domain Lookup

A WHOIS lookup typically shows: the domain registrar, registration date, expiry date, last updated date, nameservers, domain status codes, and sometimes registrant contact information (though this is often redacted under GDPR privacy protections). Technical contact information for the DNS configuration may also be available.

Since the GDPR came into force in 2018, ICANN and registrars are required to protect personally identifiable information of European registrants. Most registrars now offer WHOIS privacy protection that replaces personal details with generic information. Even outside Europe, many registrants opt into privacy protection services.

The WHOIS record includes an expiry date field. Enter the domain in this lookup tool and look for the 'Expires' date. If a domain is expiring soon and you are interested in registering it, consider monitoring it through a domain backorder service.

You can verify the registrar and registration history, but contact details are often redacted. For due diligence, combine WHOIS data with the company's publicly stated domain, SSL certificate information, and DNS records. The domain age shown in WHOIS can help identify recently registered domains that may be suspicious.

WHOIS data is used by spam filters and email security systems to assess domain reputation. A very recently registered domain sending bulk email is a red flag. Domain age, registrar, and whether the registration information is consistent are all factors in email reputation scoring.

WHOIS unavailability can mean: the domain does not exist, the domain's registry does not provide public WHOIS data (some ccTLDs have restricted WHOIS), or the WHOIS service is temporarily overloaded. Newly registered domains may also show incomplete WHOIS data until the registry processes the registration fully.
