An active email address is one that still receives messages and is monitored by a real user. This guide explains how to tell the difference between an address that exists and one that is genuinely active.
Steps to Check Email Activity
1. Verify the mailbox exists
Start with a standard SMTP check. If the mailbox does not exist, it cannot be active. Use BillionVerify to run this check without sending a test email.
2. Check for recent engagement
If the address is already on your list, look at open and click history. An address that has not engaged in 12+ months is likely inactive even if the mailbox technically exists.
3. Look for role or shared addresses
Addresses like info@, admin@, or noreply@ are often checked infrequently or handled by automated filters. They may technically be active but won't convert.
4. Run re-engagement before removal
Before deleting inactive addresses from your list, send one re-engagement email. If there is no response after 30 days, remove the address.
