For a company domain, the service may read a small, time-limited portion of the public homepage for its organization name and description. A missing profile does not cancel valid company context, and working domain mail routing does not prove the individual mailbox exists.

The exact result depends on what the address and its domain expose. Work addresses often provide company context, while personal webmail addresses usually provide much less.
Each field answers a different question. Domain metadata describes the organization behind a website. Gravatar indicates that someone published a profile for the address. Accuracy depends on the field. DNS and provider classifications are direct technical observations at lookup time. Public homepage metadata is only as accurate as the organization page. Use agreement between independent signals to build confidence. The lookup may infer “Alex Morgan” from the local part, identify the company domain, return its public website name and description, and find normal mail routing. The name remains inferred because another person could use the alias, and the domain result does not confirm that this exact mailbox exists.
An address such as hello@openai.com describes a function rather than a named owner. The result can identify it as a role account, show the organization context and MX records, and report whether a public Gravatar exists. It should not invent a person. For sales routing, the team context may be useful even though there is no individual owner match.
A Gmail example may return a free-provider flag and possibly a public Gravatar, but the gmail.com domain cannot identify the user’s employer. A readable local-part can suggest a name, while initials, numbers, or nicknames often remain ambiguous. Use the result to understand the address category, not to manufacture company or employment data.
The reserved address jane.doe@example.com contains a name-like pattern, but example.com publishes Null MX and explicitly does not receive email. That contrast is useful: identity inference and mail routing are separate. A known disposable domain follows the same principle. It is flagged for risk, company fetching is skipped, and no public owner is claimed.
Standards and public sources

The IETF published RFC 5321 in October 2008. Section 5 defines how SMTP locates a destination host through DNS. When a domain has no MX record but does have an address record, the standard says “the address is treated as if it was associated with an implicit MX RR.” That is why missing MX alone cannot be reported as proof that a domain rejects mail. RFC 7505 was published in June 2015 to define a domain-level no-mail signal. Its authors describe Null MX as “a simple mechanism by which a domain can indicate that it does not accept email.” The standard also assigns SMTP reply code 556 and enhanced status code 5.1.10 to a recipient domain with Null MX. Gravatar’s developer documentation says a profile can be retrieved with “the SHA256 hash of an email address or a profile URL slug.” It also notes that an avatar can exist even when a profile request for the same hash does not resolve.
