VIN and License Plate Lookup: BeenVerified Vehicle Search

How a VIN lookup works on BeenVerified, what a vehicle history report shows, how it compares with Carfax, and the legal limits of a license plate lookup.

VIN Lookup Guide dashboard showing vehicle history, plate checks, recalls, and seller email verification

A VIN lookup turns a 17-character code into a vehicle's story. You type the vehicle identification number. The search returns records linked to that code. Accidents, salvage titles, theft reports and market value can all show up. BeenVerified offers a VIN lookup inside its membership.

This guide walks through the BeenVerified VIN lookup step by step. It explains what a vehicle history report includes and where to find a VIN. It also covers VIN lookup vs license plate lookup, and what the law allows. Finally, it weighs BeenVerified vs Carfax for used-vehicle buyers.

We are not affiliated with BeenVerified. BillionVerify is an email verification service. BeenVerified facts here come from its own website, checked in October 2026. For the company overview, read what BeenVerified is and how it works.

Key facts (checked October 2026):

  • Every modern VIN has 17 characters, and that format has been the standard since 1981.
  • The BeenVerified Vehicle tab accepted only a VIN in October 2026, with no field for a plate number.
  • BeenVerified's VIN page offered trial members 100 monthly reports.
  • BeenVerified charged $36.89 for a single month of access, per its pricing page.
  • Under the DPPA, state motor vehicle agencies may not release a driver's personal details except for uses the law lists.
  • BillionVerify's free email verifier checks whether a seller's address is real before any money changes hands.

What Is a VIN Lookup?

A VIN lookup starts from a vehicle identification number. Every modern vehicle has one. BeenVerified calls the VIN "like a Social Security number for a car." It is "a 17-digit identifier that tells you where and when the vehicle was made."

Agencies and businesses log events against that code. BeenVerified lists "vehicle registration, safety recalls and accident reports" as examples. So a single VIN lookup can pull records from many sources at once.

The 17-character format became standard in 1981. BeenVerified notes that older vehicles have VINs too, but "the formats vary." For those, expect thinner results.

What a VIN tells you on its own

A VIN is not random. BeenVerified splits it into three parts:

  • Characters 1 to 3: the world manufacturer identifier. The first one shows the country.
  • Characters 4 to 9: the vehicle descriptor. It covers model, body, engine and more. The ninth is a check digit.
  • Characters 10 to 17: the vehicle identifier. The tenth is the model year. The eleventh is the plant. The rest is a serial number.

Decoding gives you the basics for free. A paid search adds the history behind them.

VIN lookup vs license plate lookup

This is the most common mix-up. A VIN lookup searches by the code fixed to the vehicle. A license plate lookup searches by the tag on the bumper. The VIN never changes. A plate can change with every owner, state or renewal. For a purchase, the VIN is the one to trust.

How to Do a VIN Lookup With BeenVerified

The BeenVerified VIN lookup lives in two places. One is the Vehicle tab in the homepage search box. The other is BeenVerified's VIN lookup tool.

BeenVerified VIN lookup on the homepage Vehicle tab

Screenshot: the BeenVerified homepage search box, Vehicle tab.

There is no BeenVerified license plate lookup box on this screen. The Vehicle tab asks one question: "What's the story behind that vehicle?" It has a single box marked "Enter VIN Number."

Step 1: Find the VIN

Copy all 17 characters. One wrong character pulls up a different vehicle, or nothing. The next section shows where to look.

Step 2: Enter it in the Vehicle tab

Open beenverified.com and pick the Vehicle tab. Paste the code. Press Search.

Step 3: Open the BeenVerified VIN check

Opening the full result needs a paid plan. The cost section below lists the current plans and the trial.

Step 4: Read it against the seller's story

Compare each record with what the seller told you. Mileage, owners, damage and title status should all match. A gap is a reason to ask questions.

Step 5: Confirm with a second source

No single database sees every event. Add a free government check. Then get an inspection before you pay.

Where to Find the VIN

BeenVerified lists seven places to check. On most newer passenger vehicles, the VIN sits low on the driver's side of the dashboard. You can see it from outside, at the corner of the windshield.

Where is the VIN number on a vehicle: seven spots shown by BeenVerified

Screenshot: BeenVerified's guide to where the VIN is located.

The seven spots are:

  1. The interior dashboard, driver's side.
  2. Under the hood.
  3. The front end of the frame.
  4. The driver's door, often on a sticker.
  5. The title document.
  6. The registration document.
  7. The insurance card.

On older vehicles, BeenVerified says the VIN "may be stamped on the front of the engine block." If the vehicle and the paperwork show different VINs, stop. That mismatch is a classic sign of fraud.

What a Vehicle History Report Shows

A vehicle history report gathers events tied to one VIN. BeenVerified says "state agencies and auto industry partners maintain extensive vehicle databases." Its VIN tool lists what a search "may reveal":

  • Whether the vehicle was in an accident, and how bad the damage was.
  • Whether it was listed in a salvage auction or reported stolen.
  • A list of standard equipment.
  • Sales listing history, with prices and photos.
  • Current market value, based on similar sales.
  • Estimated ownership costs over five years.

Vehicle history report details a BeenVerified VIN lookup may reveal

Screenshot: what BeenVerified says a VIN search may reveal.

The word "may" matters. A vehicle history report covers only what someone reported. A crash that never reached insurance or police can leave no trace.

What owners use it for

You don't have to be buying. BeenVerified suggests owners "track the estimated value of your car over time." It also mentions recall alerts and warranty coverage. That helps you time a sale or a trade-in.

The BeenVerified VIN check report and the seller

The BeenVerified VIN check report comes with a full membership. BeenVerified points out that the same account includes person and phone searches. You can "possibly learn more about the seller." Our BeenVerified reverse phone lookup guide covers the phone side. Our BeenVerified people search guide covers names.

How to Read a Vehicle History Report

Most entries are routine. A few deserve a closer look.

Title brands

A title brand is a permanent label on the title. Salvage, rebuilt, flood and junk are common brands. Each one cuts the value. Some lenders and insurers treat them differently.

Accident records

Look at the date, the damage area and whether airbags deployed. Minor bumps matter less. Frame or structural damage matters a lot.

Odometer readings

Readings should rise over time. A drop, or a long flat stretch, can point to a rollback or a broken gauge.

Ownership and location changes

Many owners in a short time can signal a problem vehicle. A move across state lines right before a sale can hide a brand. This trick is called title washing.

Recalls

An open recall is a free repair at a dealer. It is not a reason to walk away. It is a reason to ask whether the work was done.

How Much Does a BeenVerified VIN Lookup Cost?

BeenVerified does not sell single vehicle reports. The VIN tool is part of its membership. In October 2026, BeenVerified's pricing listed $36.89 per month for one month. A 3 month plan cost $23.98 per month, paid as $71.94. Its offers also listed a 7-day trial for $1, then $32.89 per month.

Every plan includes the same searches. So one membership covers a BeenVerified VIN lookup, people search and phone lookups. BeenVerified's VIN tool says a trial membership allows "100 reports per month." That is plenty for shopping several vehicles. Plans renew until you cancel, so set a reminder.

Used-Vehicle Scams a Vehicle History Report Can Catch

A vehicle history report is your best early warning. These are the scams it helps expose.

Title washing

A seller moves a branded vehicle to a state with looser rules. The new title comes out clean. A vehicle history report that spans states can still show the old brand.

Odometer rollback

Someone winds the mileage back to raise the price. A vehicle history report with past readings shows the drop.

Cloned VINs

A thief copies the VIN from a legal vehicle onto a stolen one. Look for the same code in two states at once. Check that the VIN plate, door sticker and title all match.

Flood damage

Flooded vehicles often get dried, cleaned and resold far away. A flood brand or a salvage auction listing is the clue. A BeenVerified VIN lookup report may show a past salvage listing.

Hidden accidents

A seller may describe a repaired crash as "minor." The record shows the damage area and date. Then a mechanic can check the repair.

No single record catches everything. A vehicle history report narrows the risk. An inspection closes the rest.

Free Ways to Do a VIN Lookup

Several free checks come straight from public bodies. Try them first.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration runs a free recall tool at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Enter the VIN to see open safety recalls. Run it on every used vehicle, even with a paid result in hand.

NICB VINCheck

The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers VINCheck at nicb.org at no cost. It screens for theft and total-loss records from participating insurers. It is a quick theft screen, not a full history.

NMVTIS reports

The US Department of Justice runs the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. NMVTIS is "designed to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles." It also aims "to keep stolen vehicles from being resold." Consumers order NMVTIS data through approved providers. The official list notes that consumers "CANNOT receive NMVTIS Vehicle History Reports from Carfax, DMVDesk, or Experian." Those firms supply that data to dealers only.

Decode it yourself

The VIN structure above already tells you the maker, year and plant. If those don't match the listing, you have your answer.

License Plate Lookup: What You Can and Can't Get

Many buyers start with a plate, not a VIN. A license plate lookup is harder than it sounds.

Is there a BeenVerified license plate lookup?

Not as a listed tool. In October 2026, the Vehicle tab took only a VIN. The VIN tool showed one search box, for the VIN. So we could not find a BeenVerified license plate lookup on its site. People still search for a BeenVerified license plate lookup. The honest answer is to request the VIN from the seller.

What the law says about plates

The Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) limits plate searches. Under 18 U.S.C. § 2721, a state motor vehicle department "shall not knowingly disclose" personal information from a vehicle record. The law then lists permitted uses, such as vehicle safety, theft and recalls.

So a public license plate lookup should not hand you an owner's name and home address. Sites that offer a license plate search usually return vehicle details instead. Be wary of any site that promises owner details on demand.

Turning a plate into a VIN

The easiest path is to ask. An honest seller will share the code. Many listings print it already. You can also read it through the glass at a viewing. Then run your own VIN lookup and vehicle history report.

BeenVerified vs Carfax

Buyers often weigh BeenVerified vs Carfax. They are different kinds of services.

Carfax is a vehicle history brand. BeenVerified is a people search membership with a VIN tool inside. A vehicle history report from BeenVerified comes bundled with person, phone and address searches. A Carfax report covers the vehicle only.

Is BeenVerified better than Carfax?

It depends on the job. Is BeenVerified better than Carfax for vetting a private seller? It can be, since one membership covers the vehicle and the person. For deep service records, Carfax is the specialist. So is BeenVerified better than Carfax overall? Not for history alone. Many buyers run both.

Is BeenVerified as good as Carfax?

Neither one sees everything. Carfax itself says it "does not have the complete history of every vehicle." It tells buyers to use its search "as one important tool, along with a vehicle inspection and test drive." That advice fits a vehicle history report from BeenVerified too. For a quick screen, BeenVerified can be enough. For a large purchase, combine sources.

Is BeenVerified legit for cars?

Yes. Its vehicle records come from government and industry databases, as it explains. Its general terms and FCRA limits still apply. Is BeenVerified legit for cars as a final word? No single source is. Inspect the vehicle as well.

Buying From a Private Seller: A Checklist

Use this list for any private sale.

  1. Get the VIN early. Ask for it before you travel to see the vehicle.
  2. Run a VIN lookup and vehicle history check. Use a paid source and the free recall tool.
  3. Match the VIN in three places. Dashboard, door label and title should agree.
  4. Pick your sources. Decide on BeenVerified vs Carfax, or use both for a big purchase.
  5. Check the seller. A BeenVerified VIN check looks at the vehicle. A people search looks at the person.
  6. Check the seller's inbox. A throwaway address is a red flag.
  7. Inspect and test drive. A mechanic sees what no record shows.
  8. Pay safely. Avoid wire transfers and gift cards. Meet at a bank if you can.

Tips for a Better VIN Lookup

  • Check every character. A typo leads to the wrong vehicle.
  • Read dates closely. A recent title transfer from another state can hide a brand.
  • Compare the BeenVerified VIN lookup report with the listing. Year, trim and engine should match.
  • Look for gaps. Long stretches with no records may mean missing data.
  • Save a copy. Keep the BeenVerified VIN lookup report with your purchase papers.

A vehicle search is legal for personal research. Buying, selling and owning a vehicle are all fine reasons.

BeenVerified sets wider limits on its whole service. Its FCRA notice says it "is not a consumer reporting agency." You may not use it for jobs, housing, credit or insurance decisions. That includes using a person report on a seller for any of those purposes. BeenVerified's Do's and Don'ts lists more rules.

The plate rules above come from the DPPA. They protect owner identity. Respect them, even when a site offers to skip them.

Verify the Seller's Email Before You Pay

Private sales run on messages. Listings, photos, VINs and payment details often travel by email. That makes the seller's inbox part of your due diligence.

Fake sellers often use throwaway inboxes. A disposable address can vanish the day after you pay. A real inbox with a long history is a better sign.

Start with the contact details in the listing. Our free phone number validator shows whether the seller's number is valid for its country. It also reports the line type and formats the number in E.164. Our free reverse email lookup reads the domain, mail routing, role patterns and any public profile behind an address. It uses public signals only. Each tool allows 20 free checks per IP per day, with no signup.

Verify a seller's email with BillionVerify: results by type, including disposable

BillionVerify dashboard: each result type is counted separately, including catch-all and disposable.

Then confirm the inbox itself. Our email verifier runs a live SMTP check on one address for free. BillionVerify checks whether an email exists and accepts mail. It flags disposable inboxes and shared role inboxes like info@. It reports catch-all domains as their own result, never as valid.

You get 20 free credits each day you use your account, up to 600 a month. They never expire. No credit card is needed. Unknown results are free. A re-check within 24 hours is free too.

A clean email does not prove the seller is honest. A disposable one is a clear warning. Check the seller's email with BillionVerify before any money moves.
